Plan your backyard, then pick the right gear
Independent guides for US homeowners planning a backyard project: which structure fits your space, what it really costs, and which models are worth buying.
Choose a part of the plan to start, or browse pergolas, greenhouses and outdoor kitchens.
What are you planning?

I want shade on the patio
Open rafters or a solid roof? Start with the difference between a pergola and a gazebo, then size and price it.
Compare pergolas and gazebos -
I want to grow year-round
Kit greenhouses range from walk-in lean-tos to full freestanding houses. Glazing, frame and siting matter more than the brand.
Choose a greenhouse -
I want to cook outside
An outdoor kitchen is a grill, a counter, storage and utilities. Plan those four and the rest follows.

Plan in the order a landscape designer would
The most common backyard mistake is buying the exciting thing first. A grill island or a greenhouse kit bought before the layout is fixed often ends up in the wrong spot: too far from the kitchen door, in afternoon shade, or blocking the route to the gate.
Our guides follow the same order a design plan does, so each decision sets up the next one.
- Map the yard. Note sun and shade through the day, slopes, drainage, utilities and the routes people already walk.
- Set the zones. Decide where you will sit, cook, grow and play, and keep busy zones close to the house.
- Add shade and shelter. A pergola or gazebo defines the main outdoor room and anchors everything around it.
- Fit the working areas. Outdoor kitchens need utilities nearby; greenhouses need full sun and a level base.
- Plan the upkeep. Paths, planting and lawn care decide how much time the finished yard asks of you.
