How we research our guides

Our job is to save you the hours of reading it takes to make a confident backyard purchase. Here is exactly how each guide is put together.

Sources we use

  • Manufacturer specifications for dimensions, materials, ratings and what is in the box.
  • Installation manuals and assembly guides, which reveal how hard a kit is to build and what tools and foundations it needs.
  • Warranty terms, read in full, because the exclusions matter as much as the headline years.
  • Retailer listings from major US stores, to check current prices, availability and shipping.
  • Verified owner reviews and Q&A, read for recurring patterns (assembly problems, rust, wind damage, customer service) rather than one-off complaints.
  • Building and safety guidance from manufacturers, utilities and code bodies when a project involves gas, electricity or structures.

Our rules

  • We never claim to have tested a product we have not. If a guide includes our own hands-on use, it says so and shows our own photos.
  • Prices change daily, so we show price ranges, date our price checks and link to the retailer for the current price.
  • We do not publish made-up ratings, testimonials or statistics.
  • Brands cannot pay for placement or for a better verdict.
  • When the right answer is a professional rather than a product, we say so.

Keeping guides current

Buying guides are reviewed at least every quarter and whenever a product is discontinued or replaced. Each guide shows the date it was last updated.
